Law is essentially it's own language.  Unless you went to law school, worked for a judge, and have gone to court as much as I have, you probably need an attorney to help translate the jargon.  Let me help.

For example, if you are the plaintiff (party filing suit) then you have to prove your case, and the process includes many of the stages and considerations below.

If you're the defendant, you especially have to consider the second column.

BEFORE YOU FILE SUIT

- Starting A File System

- Understanding Your Claim or Claims

- Researching Your Claims and the Statute of Limitations

- Explaining Your Claim(s) to Others

- Gathering Evidence

- Trying to Resolve The Problem Informally

- Weighing Traditional versus Alternative Legal Options

- Drafting or Editing Letters

- Deciding Whether to Represent Yourself or Not

- / Finding the Best Attorney for your Case

- Filing a Complaint

- / Following Local Court Rules

- Filing Within the Statute of Limitations

- Fulfilling Proof of Service Requirements

WHEN OR AFTER YOU FILE SUIT

- Expanding The Legal File System to Include Court Documents

- Answer / Responses and/or Counterclaims

- Executing A Discovery Plan

- Court Pleadings and Procedures

- Preparing for Various Hearings

- / Considering Settlement Offers and/or Mediation

- / Voir Dire (ie Selecting a Jury)

- Preparing for Trial

- Trial

- Judgment and Appeals

- Collecting on a Judgment

- Debrief and Record Results (not required but something I suggest)
